Science Engagement
Jordan’s innovation revolution must assist in solving our society’s deep and pressing socio-economic challenges. Global competitiveness, shrinking resource availability, and the requirements of a skilled labour force mean that, increasingly, an awareness and understanding of why science and research are critical to our lives is essential for developing an innovation culture. To fully realise the social, economic, and environmental benefits of the significant investment in science, research, and innovation, we as a country must communicate and engage the wider community more fully in science and in an understanding of the knowledge economy to which we aspire.
The RSS acknowledges the role of science engagement in the achievement of the RSS strategic goals.
The RSS’ Science Engagement Sector has a crosscutting mandate that aims to strategically align all science engagement activities across the organisation. The Sector is also optimally positioned to contribute towards coordinated, consistent, and effective science communication and engagement policy and implementation that will make a meaningful contribution to bridging the gap between science and society.
The mandate of RSS newest sector is to interact with the public on issues of science, engineering, and technology; to communicate the advances in these fields to the public, and to steer young minds to careers in science, engineering, and technology (SET). To achieve these goals,
Science Engagement at RSS aims to deliver a diverse set of programmes that work closely with local communities to address challenges and discover issue specific solutions that fall under four key strategic areas:
Training and Science Education, which aims to build and retain the supply of tomorrow’s scientists and innovators;
Science for Society, through which RSS shares science and technology achievements with the public, building up their appreciation of and engagement with the benefits and risks of science;
Science Communication, which engages the public with the phenomena of science, engineering and technology;
Science Policy Analysis, which brings together Jordanian experts from universities, research institutes and government research agencies to consider and advise the nation on scientific issues. It provides authoritative information and advice on current science, technology and emerging research to inform discussion and assist evidence based policy development and decision-making.
These four pillars of Science Engagement are supported by the following subsidiary departments and programs:
- Science Diplomacy
- Socio Economic Studies
- Sustainable Development Goals
- Drivers of Change Program
- IRADA Program
- Phi Institute

RSS Outreach
Science is a language that crosses borders and bridges social and economic divides. We believe that engaging with global science networks gives Jordan and the region a voice in decision-making mechanisms and debates that impact on the opportunities available to talented Jordanian scientists and researchers, and that may ultimately affect the quality of life of people in our communities. Science provides the catalyst for positive change in our lives and for better decision-making by our government and institutions. Our outreach programmes seek out the tools to improve people’s lives and to bring equitable and sustainable prosperity based on conversation, creativity and the innovative spirit of our people.
